The department of the Nievre is one of four making up Burgundy. Situated in the South West, this department is not the traditional Burgundy and was, in fact, in the past an independent Duchy. Its contrasting influences make it a diverse region and although its centre may be a wine free zone, its proximity to the Pouilly Fume vineyards and to Sancerre compensate amply.

'La Vieille Boulangerie' is situated in the village of Oudan, about one and a half kilometers off the D151 which runs through Clamecy, Varzy and then to Charite-Sur-Loire and beyond.

This peaceful and pretty village has a lively history. Now listed as a historical monument, the village used to belong to St Germain of Auxerre. The 12th and 16th century church of St Germain is in the heart of the village and the church bells still ring out as they did in days past indicating the start and end of the working day and the lunch break. They ring each hour twice in case those deeply engrossed in what they were doing might have missed the time.

The River Sauzay rises in the village in the well maintained Lavior. It was here from time immemorial, well into the 20th Century that the women of the village would meet to do their washing, exchange gossip and pass on information. The Sauzay flows from here into the lake which in the past was another village hub due to the fact that Oudan was a timber-floating port. From this reservoir in the 18th and 19th centuries, logs were floated down river to Clamecy

Oudan offers plenty of walking, cycling, fishing and the peace to really chill out and its central location enables the visitor to sample a wide range of activities and experiences.
